The founder and CEO of North Star Machining, Brian Beckius, has been fascinated with wires, batteries, light bulbs, and discovering how electrical and electronic things work since he was six years old.
Brian's first electrical project was an answering machine for his second grade science fair (it took first prize). His next project was a simple calculating engine that had wires connected in such a way that if one wire was attached to the connector annotated '2' and the other wire was attached to the connector annotated '3' the bulb annotated '5' would light up.
An expert machinist, Brian constructed his own CNC plasma cutting table and CNC mill, and he then when on to found the North Star Machining company, which specializes in manufacturing precision-machined components.
As a hobby, Brian has spent the last few years developing a number of computer-controlled robots. When he first heard of the Google Lunar X Prize, which involves building a Robot Rover and landing it on the moon, Brian looked at his latest project – an articulated mobile robot platform sitting in his machine shop – and said to himself: "Well, there's the prototype for the rover, now all we need to do is build a real one and get it to the moon!"
